A Century of Challenge and Change:
The Filipino American Story
Unit 1: Journey Filipinas

Who am I? Where are my ancestors from? Join Marissa and Jordan on their journey into the fascinating world of Philippine history and culture. As they travel through the archipelago on their barangay boat, they will learn about themselves. They will discover new places and meet many interesting people who will share with them the rich heritage of Filipino Americans.

Unit 2: Challenge History

History is more than learning about “dead people” and “dates.” It is about exploring multiple perspectives and critically thinking about what you learn. Join Marissa and Jordan as they “talk back” to history and question how history has been written: Who writes history? Whose views are represented? Whose views are left out? Redefine history to be more inclusive and representative of us all.

Unit 3: Brown Amerika

Imagine moving to a new country. What made you come? How did it feel? Accompany Marissa and Jordan as they place themselves into historical photographs that teach about the Filipino pioneers who came to America for labor, learning, and love. Learn how it felt to “grow up brown in Amerika.”

Unit 4: Kick it Up! Make History

Have you ever played the game, Sipa? Sipa is the Filipino version of “hacky sack.” The goal is to keep the Sipa ball in the air as long as possible. Now, imagine that our history is the Sipa ball. Work with Marissa and Jordan to “kick it up” and keep our history moving forward. How will you share what you’ve learned? What are you going to do contribute to Filipino American history?
