A Century of Challenge and Change:
The Filipino American Story
ABOUT THE PROJECT
About the Project

In 2006, the Smithsonian Institution observes the 100th anniversary of Filipino immigration to the United States with a series of programs around the theme A Century of Challenge and Change: The Filipino American Story. In order to help raise awareness of Filipino American History, the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Program sponsored the Filipino American Curriculum Project. The project’s mission is twofold:

1) to invite students on an interactive journey through Filipino American history

2) to aid teachers in incorporating Filipino American subject matter into their classes by developing and making curriculum materials accessible to them.

The curriculum materials consist of four units, focusing on Philippine and Filipino American History and Culture for 5th through 8th graders. Units and lessons center on the following big ideas (which are presented on the navigation bar of the student pages):

Unit

Big Ideas

Unit 1

Philippine History
Geography

Unit 2

Unit 3

Curriculum materials include sample lesson plans, timelines, activities and resources that teachers can integrate into their own classroom. The curriculum framework uses the National Social Studies standards as a guide, and other national standards to facilitate the use of lessons to address state standards.
