“School Begins”
The media fueled support for control of the Philippines, through propaganda (the
spreading of ideas) in the form of sensational stories and illustrations
with racist captions.
Here is an example of an 1899 Dalyrmple political cartoon entitled “School
Begins” from Puck which portrays the perspective of United States as "Benevolent
America" and the Philippines as “ignorant, indolent savages”.
You can understand the children’s resistance as Uncle Sam lectures to
them: "
Now, children, you've got to learn these lessons whether you
want to or not!..." The blackboard in the background reads "
The
consent of the governed is a good thing in theory, but very rare in fact....England
has governed her colonies whether they consented or not. By not waiting for
their consent she has greatly advanced the world's civilization....The U.S.
must govern its new territories with or without the consent of the governed
until they can govern themselves."
